While statements like the one above may be well-intentioned, they can actually cause harm by undermining the painful and debilitating impact that OCD can have on the daily lives of OCD sufferers.
The truth is that no forms of OCD are helpful.
It’s also equally important to clarify that OCD sufferers have nothing of which to be ashamed. When we minimize or joke about the disruption and hardship that OCD sufferers experience, we can contribute to their sense of isolation and guilt.
Instead, it’s important to acknowledge the very real disruption and challenges presented by OCD while also letting our loved ones know that they’re not alone and that we believe in them and their ability to overcome.
