"Black Hole Sun" is a song by American rock band Soundgarden. Written by frontman Chris Cornell, the song was released in May 1994 by A&M Records as the third single from the band's fourth studio album, Superunknown (1994). Considered to be the band's signature song, it topped the US Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart, where it spent a total of seven weeks at number one. Despite peaking at number two on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, "Black Hole Sun" finished as the number-one track of 1994 for that listing. Worldwide, the single reached the top 10 in Australia, Canada, France, and Ireland, while in Iceland, it reached number one. The accompanying music video was directed by Howard Greenhalgh and received the award for Best Metal/Hard Rock Video at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards.

Soundgarden was a former American rock band from Seattle, founded in 1984 by singer and drummer Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Matt Cameron became the band’s permanent drummer in 1986, and bassist Ben Shepherd permanently replaced Yamamoto in 1990. On May 18, 2017, it was announced that singer Chris Cornell had died at the age of 52 in Detroit. News agency AP reported that his management described the death as "sudden and unexpected."

Soundgarden was one of the original bands to create *grunge*, a form of alternative rock that emerged in Seattle. Although the band began years earlier and bore more resemblance to bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin compared to their contemporaries, they are regarded as one of the "big four" grunge bands of the 1990s, alongside Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam.

Soundgarden was one of many grunge bands signed to indie label Sub Pop and was the first grunge band to sign with a major label (A\&M Records in 1988). However, the band only achieved commercial success after grunge rose to popularity in the early 1990s, particularly due to the breakthrough of Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Soundgarden’s greatest success came with the 1994 album *Superunknown*, featuring the singles “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman,” both of which won Grammy Awards. In 1997, the group disbanded due to artistic differences. The band members pursued other projects for several years until reuniting in 2010. Two years later, the reunion was solidified with the release of *King Animal*, the band's sixth studio album.

Soundgarden has sold over twenty million records worldwide, including about eight million in the United States.
