“Passion Play” observes a visceral re-enactment of Christ’s crucifixion portrayed by the people of Angles, Philippines. The film is a mediation on religious traditions and spectacle that gradually divorces itself from reality and embraces a bombastic orchestral score, emphasizing the performative and theatrical aspects of worship. The subjectively of shock and delight, worship and sacrilege, meet in a tense document of passions not for the squeamish.
