The dying light dipped below the horizon, slender as a blade, as they crested the ridge.
At last, those snow-capped, dread gates, glimpsed hitherto only in dreams, appeared in the distance, across endless, empty plains, wreathed in fresh dusk.
"Our last chance for a fire, below those crags," he said, pointing, and his wolf whimpered.
"Oh you gods" she thought. "Why have you brought me to this place, to this man, whose name was never spoke?"
As the fire burnt low, she shivered and dared reach across to clasp his hand, and recoiled.
Cold! Too cold. "A monster!" She cried. His wolf snarled, but he only sighed.
"Aye, a monster I am. Your monster, my lady. Aeons I waited, til all seemed lost and any memory of warmth had bled away. This wolf is all that remains to me."
He scratched the snuffling creature behind the ear. The wolf looked at her, knowing, its eyes pinpricks of fire in the night.
"Yet, you come to me at last, in this place, though the hour is late. We must away". He kicked snow over the embers and stalked into the shadows, his wolf at heel.
For a day and a night and a day again, it seemed, they walked, though the swollen moon never moved in the darkened, velvet skies.
At once, the looming city spread out before them. The wolf's fur bristled, and she gasped, though the man only smiled in relief.
Woman and man and beast alike advanced on those ruined, shapeless columns. In the shadow of the gates, she saw a pulse, calling to mind the embers of their dying fire, that felt so long ago now.
And in that amorphous glow, what was sundered made whole, she remembered his face and the warmth of his voice at last. As the dawning light chased the night away, she laughed in delight and they turned, to bear the word:
"Bidh an dithis gu bhith nan iomadh"
The two become the many become the one.
