On 25 March 2002, Britney Spears was interviewed by ITN ahead of the UK premiere of her big screen debut, Crossroads (dir. Tamra Davis). As well as talking about her reasons for doing a movie and how it felt to see herself on the big screen, Spears also found a tactful way of declining to talk about the media's interest in her private life, in particular her break-up with Justin Timberlake, who Spears had dated for three years. Among the revelations contained in Britney Spears' memoir, The Woman in Me (published 24 October 2023), are details of Spears' relationship with Timberlake. Specifically, Spears candidly recounts having an abortion during the relationship, and how Timberlake broke up with Spears with a two-word text message after Spears kissed her choreographer, Wade Robson. Elsewhere, Spears discussed the 13-year conservatorship controlled by her father that led to the high-profile "Free Britney" campaign to emancipate the Mississipi-born singer.
