Mr. Ruhollah, an undercover agent for the anti-narcotics force, had been infiltrating the dark for years, but nothing was harder for him than rescuing an old friend. Rashid, his best friend from his youth, was trapped in the trap of addiction; trapped deeper than he knew. Ruhollah decided to come up with a plan to save him, even if it meant making a promise he would never actually keep.
One day, with an indifferent face and a confident tone, he said to Rashid:
“Let’s go home, I’ll get you some drugs there.”
Rashid, who no longer had any hope in anyone, just held on to that promise and set off with Ruhollah.
But when they got home, there was no sign of the drugs. Instead, there was a room filled with books, light, and the peace that Rashid had forgotten for years. Ruhollah looked at him and said:
“Comrade, I promised to give you something you were looking for… but not something that is killing you. You came here because I want to save you.”
Rashid got angry, shouted, and said:
“You promised me! Why did you lie?!”
Ruhollah looked at him, stunned and stunned; not out of fear, but out of pain. He said:
“Yes, I promised… but my promise was to help you get out of this swamp. I didn’t lie… I just showed you the way to salvation.”
And perhaps it was Ruhollah’s surprised look and calm voice that stirred something in Rashid’s heart… because salvation doesn’t always come with a shout, sometimes it starts with a sweet lie and ends with a bitter truth.
