Jamaican reggae fusion artist Orville Richard Burrell, better known by his stage name Shaggy, was born on October 22, 1968 in Kingston, Jamaica. At the age of 18, Shaggy moved to New York City with his mother, settling in Brooklyn. Since the crack era was in full swing at the time there, he ended up running with a bunch of street hustlers. But things soon started catching up to them. When a couple of his friends got locked up, Shaggy woke up and decided to take his life in a more positive direction. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. It was during his service where he perfected his ‘toasting’, the singing cadence that he’d become known for. Years later, Shaggy would reveal that the style was inspired by the way his drill instructors shouted commands. After his military days were over, he decided to pursue music full-time. His first hit, "Oh Carolina", dropped in January 1993.
