Hello everything! Yeah, here are another sixteen killer sydes from the finest sixties’ unknown girls!! Featuring a lot of unreleased and unheard stuff! You’ll be pleased. Let’s see what we can find about these ones!
A1- & A4- Female Species was a band launched in Whittier, California in 1966 by Vickie Gossett and Ronnie Gossett. Members came and went; their base of operations moved to Las Vegas, back to LA, and over to Nashville. Along the way their sound transformed from garage rock to lounge to country-pop. A 10” single sided vinyl was issued as a promo in 1966 with 4 songs, including “You Need Me” (track 4 of the present compilation) and “Tale Of My Lost Love” which was recently compiled in “Louis Wayne Moody High: 1967”. “The Trip” remained unreleased, and is even absent from the Numero Group LP anthology of the band, which is a pity!
- Unreleased recording – none (1966?)
A2- & B1- Friendship was a band from New York, NY, active in around 1968. Members were Ed Lick, Stephen Schachtel, Phyllis Blackman and Bill McNally. Session players included Barry Manilow, John Schachtel (who played Trumpet on "Peace Of Mind") and Skip Juriad on the 3-song demo acetate. The songs were written by Ed Lick and Stephen Schachtel. Two other songs were copyrighted: “Dreaming” (7 May 68) and “I Want To Make Some Noise” (24 Jun 68) but it’s not sure they were recorded. None of these recordings were released at the time. I got the info from Stephen Schachtel when I uploaded the acetate on Youtube. There wasn’t even the name of the band on it, but a viewer found the names of Ed & Stephen in the copyright entries and actually found Stephen.
- Sound Center Inc. acetate – none (1968)
A3- The Germz was a garage/psych band from the Long Island, NY area, active in the mid/late-sixties. Formed around 1964 by keyboardist Marty Green and drummer Shelly Unger, the band was first known as Terry And The Pirates. The band also included Wendy Green on vocals and Bob Tobin on lead guitar, Jefferson Travis on rhythm guitar, and Steve Lewin on bass. From the own words of Wendy Green, they were a garage band but their producer had other plans for them. That’s why the flip to this song is a vocal/soul number titled “No Easy Way Down”. As producer George Goldner wasn’t happy with the first take, Wendy had to work with a vocal coach, and had to record 20 takes before he was satisfied! All 2,000 copies of the disc were sold and “No Easy Way Down” reached #48 in the NY charts. The band broke up shortly after the release but Marty and Wendy became staff-songwriters at Screen-Gems/Columbia for one year. Their single was reissued, with the name changed to The Lit Candle, apparently to avoid paying fees to the band, as they were not notified about it. A 5-song Dick Charles acetate was sold on Ebay that include a demo version of “Boy-Girl Love”, as well as a few unreleased garage tracks. Unfortunately, I’ve only heard snippets.
Most of this come from this video:
- Vertigo – V-8001 (1967)
A4- See A1.
- Not On Label – RI-#1 (1966)
A5- The Soul Seekers were from Duluth, MN, featuring Bonnie Matheson on vocals, Tom Jones on bass and guitar, Frank Bolos and Dave Slattery on guitar and my brother Mark Shefchik on drums. Their recordings were produced by Dale Menten at Dove Studio in Bloomington, and was a significant chart hit on WEBC radio in Duluth in the summer of 1967. They released 2 singles of covers in 1967. Their second 45 contains two covers, “Glitter And Gold”, originally recorded by The Turtles in 1965, and this version of Dave Anthony's Moods’ “New Directions”.
- Westchester – DR-272 (1967)
A6- The Care Package recorded three folk/sunshine pop music singles for Jubilee between 1966 and 1967. Not much info, some names are linked to the band via writing credits, but I’m not sure they were actually in it.
- Jubilee – 45-5563 (Mar 1967)
