At least 17 people were killed and over 100 others were injured in an explosion in a five-storey building in Gulistan area in Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon.
Identities of the deceased – 15 males and two females – could not be known immediately.
The news of the explosion came after two deadly explosions in Dhaka and Chattogram earlier this week.
Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters’ control room duty officer Khaleda Yesmin in Dhaka said that an explosion occurred in a building near the BRTC bus counter at the Phulbaria intersection of Gulistan at about 5:00pm on Tuesday.
The five-storey building houses sanitary shops on the ground floor and the office of a private bank on the other four floors, she said.
Five firefighting and rescue units rushed to the spot to conduct a rescue operation, she said.
The reason behind the fire could not be known immediately.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost in-charge Bachchu Mia said that a total of 17 bodies were brought to the hospital from the spot and over 80 injured people, including several with critical injuries, were brought to the hospital until 10:15pm.
Witnesses said that the explosion blew off the walls of the building and the debris fell on the adjacent footpath and road while several rickshaw-van pullers, pedestrians, small vehicles and passengers of a bus who had been passing by the place became injured.
