Ratatouille at Shnobel Tone:
I’m sure you all know the Shnobel channel – Roman is one of the founding fathers of guitar gear YouTube, having made over 2700 videos since 2010, and I’m sure we’ve all spent money on pedals after watching his videos in the past. I know I have!
As well as being known for his tonal tweaking skills and his tasty guitar chops, Roman is also a vastly experienced musician and modder of gear, and on his Shnobel tone website he offers a number of pedal mods. For the last few years, he’s also been building pedals, and this is where I come in.
As a huge Rat pedal fan, when I saw (and heard!) the Shnobel Ratatouille, I knew I had to try it. Now, after meeting Roman in person at the 2024 NAMM Show, I finally have a Rataouille to show you all!
It looks a bit like a Rat, and it’s named like one… but it’s actually an original circuit. Roman based his circuit ideas on the Rat, but ended up with some totally different – so this is no mere Rat clone. The Ratatouille has the standard Volume, Filter and Distortion knobs, though, and it comes in a classy, minimalist black enclosure. Made in the USA, it’ll set you back $269 as of early 2024.
Now, Rats are wonderful for their spiky clean boosts, their rich crunches and their mad fuzzy distortion sounds – and in this video, I put the Ratatouille through its paces in as many musical styles as possible to see how versatile it truly is. That means everything from country, folk and indie, to pop, rock, blues, punk, metal and more. I use my Fender Telecaster for single coil tones, and my Epiphone Les Paul for humbucking sounds. There’s even a couple of loops where we really twist the knobs of the pedal, and a direct comparison with my ProCat Rat 2.

Make sure you sub to Roman and check out more of his Ratatouille videos here:
My setup was as follows: I ran the Ratatouille straight into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head. That went from the amp’s Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to play the loops.
