Pamukkale, Turkey is known for its mineral hot springs flowing down white travertine terraces, its name means "Cotton Castle" in Turkish. Pamukkale is also the site of the ruins of the ancient city of Hierapolis: an important Hellenistic, and later - Roman city, famous for its hot springs used as a spa. Multiple earthquakes damaged the city during the centuries. The well preserved ruins include a theater, a necropolis with sarcophagi, temples and antique baths with submerged Roman columns. Pamukkale and Hierapolis are UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Laodicea (Laodikeia) is another ancient greco-roman city, its ruins are located between Pamukkale and the nearby city of Denizli. It was one of the wealthiest cities of the ancient world, and one of the early centers of Christianity - its church is one of the seven, addressed in the Book of Revelation.
