On 8 October 1992, former West German chancellor Willy Brandt died aged 78. The following week, ITN travelled to Berlin to document his state funeral. On 16 October, the day before Brandt's funeral service, thousands of Germans travelled to the Reichstag, where Brandt's body was lying in state, to pay their respects. As well as filming mourners visiting the Reichstag during Brandt’s lying-in-state and funeral, ITN’s cameras captured other scenes of daily life in newly-reunified Berlin: tourists visiting Checkpoint Charlie; working life at the Oberspree Cable Works (Kabelwerk an der Oberspree, or KWO); revellers dancing in a social club; and street scenes surrounding famous landmarks including the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church; the Matschinsky-Denninghoff sculpture, “Berlin”, on the city’s Tauentzienstraße; and the East Side Gallery.
