The Story of Birtukan, An Amhara Woman from Ethiopia
Birtukan was born into poverty, yet she carried the light of brilliance within her. She was a gifted student, determined to rise above her circumstances. Between household chores and studies, she persevered, taking her 12th grade national exam and scoring 392. With this achievement, she earned admission to Dembidolo University to study pharmacy.
Her teachers quickly recognized her intelligence and resilience. Touched by her struggles, they supported her, helping her cover some of her expenses. With their help and her unwavering determination, she successfully completed her first year. Hope was within reach.
But in her second year, everything changed. One day, while studying in the library, chaos erupted. A riot broke out, and young Oromo men stormed the campus. They claimed to be rescuing her and her friends, leading them away in a vehicle. But as the journey stretched on, an awful truth settled in they had been kidnapped.
Their nightmare had only begun. The journey seemed endless, and when the captors finally stopped, they were forced to walk for miles into the unknown.
Then came the suffering. Starved and thirsty, they were given filthy water to drink. Stale bread was thrown at them as if they were animals. For six months, they endured relentless torment. But the worst was yet to come.
One day, their captors devised a new form of cruelty they ordered Birtukan and her friends to strip. They refused, but their resistance was futile. They were overpowered, assaulted, and gang raped. Their bodies were not just violated but mutilated iron rods were used to destroy their reproductive organs, sealing their pain in ways words cannot capture.
When Birtukan regained consciousness three days later, she found herself barely alive. Next to her lay one of her friends, just as broken, just as wounded. Though her body was shattered, her will be remained. Summoning every ounce of strength left in her, she carried her injured friend and began a desperate journey through an unfamiliar forest.
Somewhere along the way, they got separated. Alone, wounded, and stripped of everything, Birtukan somehow made her way back to the university. The administration provided what little medical assistance they could, but it was not enough. She could no longer walk. She had lost everything her education, her dignity, her future.
Left with no choice, she resorted to begging at the university gate. When that, too, became unbearable, she made her way to Addis Ababa, where she continued begging to survive. In time, she received some assistance. But she soon discovered that the nightmare had left her with more than scars, she was pregnant. The child she carried was a haunting reminder of the horrors she had endured.
Yet, even after giving birth, life showed her no mercy. She returned to the streets, forced once again to beg for survival.
One day, fate led EBS Television to her. They shared her story with the world. But the fate of her kidnapped friends remains unknown. They were swallowed by silence, lost in the darkness of a world that refused to see them.
If you ask why Birtukan endured such unimaginable suffering, the answer is cruelly simple:
"Because she is Amhara."
Yet, even after all she has been through, Birtukan carries the unbreakable spirit of her people. During her interview on EBS TV, she spoke words that reflect the resilience and strength of the Amhara people:
"Tomorrow or the day after, my life will be fulfilled. I will achieve my dreams, no matter the horrors I have endured. I will fight my battle, and one day, I will make you all proud."
This is not just Birtukan’s story it is the story of an entire nation called #Amhara who have suffered in silence for too long. We ask the world to listen, to see, and to stand with the Amhara people.
