
The tool is called CRISPR. To use it, scientists use a protein, directed by molecules that act like GPS coordinates, to search through a cell’s DNA until it finds a match... then makes a cut... so they can stick in new DNA. It’s basically a text editor for genes!
This baby had one tiny error in its DNA causing a life-threatening disorder. So they fixed that one error out of 3 billion DNA pairs. This is truly huge.
This same tech is saving other lives too - like giving more standardized edits to people with sickle cell disease.
