Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio/Vladimir Fedoseyev
Jennifer Pike (Violin)
Vaughan Williams – Thomas Tallis Fantasia
Sibelius – Violin Concerto
Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 5
Here’s a programme that packs an emotional punch. Tchaikovsky, a Russian composer who lived a traumatic, troubled life – not least at the hands of music critics – battles with fate in his beautiful and moving Fifth Symphony, while Sibelius paints a stunningly bleak but ultimately affectionate picture of his native Finland and Vaughan Williams looks both forward to the 20th century and back to the middle ages with his mystical Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis. The Tchaikovsky Orchestra has its namesake’s music flowing through its veins, and violinist Jennifer Pike is the one of the brightest stars of the stage today. It should be quite something. Just don’t forget to pack the tissues…
