
Astronomers have always placed their faith in theories and calculations built upon observations from earlier, less sophisticated technology. One of these foundational pieces was the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB), discovered in the nineteen sixties. This ancient light, thought to be a remnant of the Big Bang, was seen as a snapshot of the infant universe. From it, scientists gleaned information about the universe's expansion, density, and even its age. But as Webb’s sharper eyes take their turn, it’s becoming clear that we might have misread this so-called “picture” for decades.
