Noise Rock is a genre of music that arose in the 80s and arguably peaked in popularity in the ;90s and early 00s. Many credit the band Velvet Underground as well as Iggy Pop and The Stooges with being the forefather of this sound. Bands such as Sonic Youth and The Butthole Surfers introduced it to mainstream audiences during the 90s wave of Alternative Rock music.

However, the genre has underground roots, arising from Experimental music, Avant Garde, Beatnik poetry and Folk music, as well as the more free-form fringes of Industrial and Jazz. Noise Rock artists sometimes utilize more conventional song structures, but more often operate in loose jam structures.
