The distribution of gas influences the formation of stars more than volume, according to a new study by researchers at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Australia.

Using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope, the team looked at radio waves and visible light to explore the gas distribution that helps form stars in roughly 1,000 galaxies. The survey revealed that having more gas in a galaxy does not automatically mean it will create more stars. Instead, galaxies that are forming stars usually have a higher concentration of gas in the areas where the stars reside.
