There is nothing quite as special as the tight bond that can develop between humans and their canine friends. Standing by our sides through times of peril, amazing stories have often emerged of the selfless and heroic deeds performed by dogs in the hopes of keeping their humans safe. During World War II, the founder of the PDSA, Maria Dickin CBE, wanted to recognize these acts of bravery. So, in 1943, she created what is now known as the Animal’s Victoria Cross, or the Dickin Medal, to honour the animals that, in their own way, fought alongside us.
