Here is my latest early gourd banjo; the thirtieth banjo that I've made. I based its design on the instrument depicted in John Rose's circa 1780 watercolor painting titled "The Old Plantation." In this video I play a few random instrumental pieces, and then briefly describe the instrument and how I built it. I grew the gourd, and hand carved every piece. There are no metal parts in any of my gourd banjos--even the goat skin is tacked on with wooden cobbler's pegs.
