Zack Snyder's Justice League (colloquially referred to as the Snyder Cut) is the 2021 director's cut of the 2017 American superhero film Justice League, the fifth film set within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which is based on the team of the same name appearing in DC Comics. It is intended to match director Zack Snyder's original vision for the film prior to his departure from the production. The film follows Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller), and Superman (Henry Cavill) as they form an alliance to stop the extradimensional New God Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) and his army of Parademons from conquering Earth for his overlord, Darkseid (Ray Porter).
The production of the original film was difficult, with major changing to its script during production. In May 2017, Snyder stepped down during post-production following the death of his daughter, and Joss Whedon was hired to finish the film, completing it as an uncredited additional director. Whedon wrote and directed new sequences and incorporated a brighter, more humorous tone while significantly reducing the runtime in accordance with directives from Warner Bros. Pictures. The theatrical version polarized critics and underperformed at the box office, resulting in Warner Bros. developing future DCEU films around individual characters with less an emphasis on a wider shared universe.
Many people expressed interest in Snyder's version of the film, often referred to as "the Snyder cut". Although most industry insiders reported its release unlikely, Warner Bros. moved ahead with it in February 2020. In May 2020, Snyder announced it would be released as "Zack Snyder's Justice League" on HBO Max. $70 million was spent to complete the visual effects, score, and editing, with new material being shot in October 2020. The film is dedicated to the memory of Autumn Snyder.
Zack Snyder's Justice League was released on HBO Max in the United States on March 18, 2021. It became the fourth-most-streamed film on the platform that year. Critics generally considered the film an improvement over the 2017 theatrical release. Zack Snyder agreed to direct Justice League as the third part of his five part story arc. He had Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and others returning their roles from his previous Snyderverse films with music done by Junkie XL and set for a November 2017 release.
Joss Whedon was tasked with completing the post-production process of the theatrical cut. Snyder's rough cut was not well liked by Whedon, the studio or financiers, understandably nervous considering the reception to BvS. The studio agreed that the film would need extensive re-shoots and newly written scenes. The director's guild chose not to give Whedon a co-directing credit, as his contribution was mostly alternative dialogue and some new reaction shots in existing scenes. Some large plot changes were made to make a two hour runtime possible. Some of the post-production touches included a new design for Steppinwolf, brighter color grading and Junkie XL was replaced with Danny Elfman as composer.
Due to how Snyder fans were unhappy with the final result, the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement trended for three years. Many Snyder fans donated to suicide prevention centers, others had harassed Joss Whedon and other people on the internet. Dozens of people involved with the film approved of the movement. By Spring 2020, Zack Snyder confirmed that he is restoring his version of Justice League for HBO Max. The Snyder Cut was released as a 4 hour film on HBO Max by March 18th, 2021. It was originally going to be a 4-part miniseries alongside the film, but it became a film.
