John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster was the third surviving son of King Edward III of England and Queen Philippa of Hainaut. But while most royal younger brothers fade into the footnotes of history, John became one of the most famous men of the medieval ages. His personal achievements in war and diplomacy were significant, and I covered them in last week’s episode. But John of Gaunt is best known for the messy dynasty he launched. He was married 3 times and fathered a total of 14 children. One of his sons usurped the English throne, two of his daughters became Queens on the Iberian peninsula. And his illegitimate children sowed the seeds for a hostile take over of England in the Wars of the roses. Lets meet the children of John of Gaunt.
