My composting area has grown a lot since I first took the plot on four years ago!

You can see the simple set up, literally just 4 posts and 4 pallets tied together. Very simple but effective! I fill about two of these bays a year, turn them once and then bed them in with cardboard to rot down. Takes about 6-12 months depending on the time of year.

I always have homemade compost available though as I am continuously adding to them and I started several years ago. It might seem slow going but if you start composting now you’ll thank your future self ☝️

I use it to mix in with my potting mix, as a thin top layer mulch on my no dig beds, to mulch my greenhouse with and even sometimes to sow seeds in.

Homemade compost really has amazing properties that bought sterile stuff just can’t compare with! Sadly I don’t make enough to be self sufficient in compost 😆 and I maybe wouldn’t use it for house plants. But by adding a handful of homemade gold to your bought potting compost, you can seed you local beneficial microflora into it, doing wonders for your plants!

But I get it, it can feel like a daunting task as it may seem like dark magic (literally!)
