Top 10 fears. A list of fears. We know of fear of public speaking, fear of death, fear of god, fear of crowds, fear of flying, fear of abandonment, fear of bullies, of snakes, of spiders. How much is political correctness caused by fear - fear of abandonment by those in our group? How much is religious rage caused by fear - fear of god? How often do politicians back down because of the fear factor?
Fear - so deeply rooted most of us are unaware of how much it influences us. Fear of what the neighbors will think. Fear of being laughed at. Fear of being wrong.
We live in a society built on the fear factor. You could even call it a fear factory.
We've been doing a lot to combat fears, to overcome fear. But overcoming fear, not easy. Just think of it. The Old Testament god is a god of fear. If you don't obey, you get punished severely. The world gets flooded. The Roman Empire is also founded on fear. All the original women were raped. They were women from another tribe, abducted and raped. Greek myths too are full of reasons to fear.
But it's not the old myths that count. What counts NOW is that, even now, the fear factor is powerful in the West, and in fact in the whole world.
What to do? We need to deal with fear, overcome fear.
A beginning: recognize that fear is a foundation of Western society, that fear is an underpinning of Western society, instilled even in the myth of the founding of Rome (The Rape of the Sabine Women).
But much more is needed. It's one thing to recognize something. It takes a lot more to deal with it.
