On 13 June 1986, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was questioned live in the Channel 4 News studio by ITN's Peter Sissons. The main topic of conversation was the growing crisis in South Africa, where the apartheid government had imposed a State of Emergency in response to escalating internal unrest, widespread political violence, and increasing resistance to apartheid. The immediate trigger was the government's concern over planned commemorations of the 10th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising, which authorities believed could spark even greater violence and mass protest. The State of Emergency granted the government sweeping powers, including the ability to detain thousands of activists, ban meetings, censor media coverage, and restrict political gatherings. It led to international calls for sanctions to be placed on South Africa's apartheid regime, a move which Thatcher argued would be ineffective as well as damaging to Africa's wider economy.
