Budgies were first exported from Australia in the 1840s, after being brought to Europe by English naturalist John Gould. Their popularity as pets soared, and by the 1850s, they were being widely bred across Europe and later North America. Due to over-trapping, Australia banned their export in 1894, but by then, captive breeding had already made them one of the world’s most popular pet birds.
