Tony Iommi is the guitarist and founding member of Black Sabbath, widely regarded as the godfather of heavy metal guitar. Born February 19, 1948 in Birmingham, England, he helped invent the heavy, downtuned, riff-driven sound that defined metal.After losing the tips of two fingers in a factory accident at age 17, Iommi built homemade prosthetic tips and downtuned his guitar to ease tension—this created the signature doomy sound of Sabbath.
