The political atmosphere in Rivers State continues to intensify as new developments stir both support and criticism. On Monday, women in Port Harcourt staged a solidarity protest backing Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas and President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule. Dressed in white and carrying placards that read “State of Emergency is Constitutional” and “No More Fubara,” the women claimed that federal intervention had restored calm and significantly reduced cult-related violence.

However, the judiciary was rocked the same day by the resignation of Chief Magistrate Justice Ejike George, who served for 16 years. He described the current governance under the Sole Administrator as “quasi-military” and fundamentally “alien to democratic norms.” His departure underscores the growing unease among state institutions over the legitimacy and democratic impact of federal actions in the region.

To help us understand these conflicting developments and what they signal for the future of governance in Rivers State, we speak with Jack Epelle, founder of TafAfrica. He provides insight into the motivations behind the women’s protest, the legal and political implications of the Chief Magistrate’s resignation, and how these actions shape public perception, loyalty, and trust in state institutions.
