People have gotten used to sporting smartwatches and other wearable technologies to monitor their physical fitness, and now companies are offering them wearables that target their mental health.

They all take a slightly different approach. The Mendi headset, for example, uses functional near-infrared spectroscopy to analyse blood oxygen in the prefrontal cortex and provides visual feedback to train your brain. The Muse headband does something similar but using EEG and audio feedback. Whilst other devices use vibration to kickstart your mental wellbeing.

In our latest feature, reporter Helen Thomson puts a selection of them to the test and explores the cutting edge neuro-physiological mechanisms of how they work, whether they have any drawbacks and where they might be able to help in the future.
