Have you ever seen a rainbow? Did you know that its original shape is not half a circle, but a full circle? Rainbows form when sunlight enters water droplets in the air. The light is deflected and reflected inside the droplet before being refracted back out. This process separates white light into a spectrum of colors. Since the angle of refraction is always around 42 degrees, the rainbow is a circle. We only see half of the rainbow because the other half is obscured by the horizon. However, from an airplane, the rainbow appears as a complete circle.
