And, as the bigger one followed, its wings got a little out of control and flopped onto the small one, sort of accidentally (we’re sure 😊) bashing the little one in the face. Their wings are growing longer so quickly that it’s sometimes hard for their balance and control systems to keep up.
The big one then ventured out on its own and was able to almost hold its balance for almost long enough to get almost across to the other side. It did take a little time out, so it could have a rest and show off its extra big beautiful feet…and its extra full food storage container (crop) at the bottom of its throat.
In the afternoon, both chicks were napping next to their guard, Papa Shadow, when the smaller one decided to show off its improved balance—sitting almost as centered as the big one with only an occasional whoops! It also had to make sure everyone could check out its almost giant feet—a bit smaller than its sibling, but catching up quickly…and it showed that its crop is quite full, so it is holding its own in the feeding arena.
Later, Shadow gave them a lovely feeding. It seemed at first like the bigger chick was getting all the food, but the little one finally jumped into the middle of the delivery system and grabbed its piece. And Shadow continued feeding the smaller one after the bigger one was too full to open its mouth any more.
Jackie, of course, is still very involved in the care, the loving and the feeding of their precious chicks. Yesterday, she delivered 2 of the 3 fish and did her share of feeding and guarding, plus her usual night-duty on the nest.
The chicks are growing quickly right before our eyes, and will continue to nearly double their size every few days. We’ll all keep gentle watch to be amazed by the beautiful journey and treasures of nature.
Sandy
PS: There’s still time to enter the chick naming contest until Friday midnight--
