7. SOUNDBITE (English) Coleton Wilcox, Galveston resident:
“My whole life basically coming down here to Galveston and spending (time) out in the Gulf of Mexico. Whole families have a history of boats in this area on the Gulf of Mexico. And so if they changes, the Gulf of America wouldn't affect me here. So it sounds great since I've been spending every 4th of July, just about of my whole life on the Gulf of Mexico. And it would be great to spend a 4th of July on the Gulf of America. Sounds. Sounds like fun.”
8. Various ships docked
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Raymond Reid, Galveston visitor:
“It's going to ruffled some feathers. But anytime you introduce change to the masses, it causes ripples into the effect of things in society. So I'm sure it'll upset some people, but it's really not that big of a deal. I mean, it's just a body of water. It's not going anywhere.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Vern Packard, Galveston visitor:
“President Trump does a lot of things that people like and a lot of people don't like and so there's certainly going to be a lot of people don't like it. A lot of people do. And that's what we get when we get a non-politician, a businessman in as president. So we got to just put on our seatbelts and (get) ready for the ride.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Raymond Reid, Galveston visitor:
“Well, when you look at the way the world is. China's trying to get Taiwan. You've got other countries trying to step over their borders and take a little piece of land. It kind of would seem to fit that America steps out and takes a little bit more just like everybody else.”

STORYLINE:
Among the executive orders signed by U.S. President Donald Trump following his inauguration was one calling for the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America.

It says that within 30 days, the interior secretary will rename “the U.S. Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba.”

Visitors taking in the view of the Gulf in Galveston, Texas, on Friday weren't sure what to make of the president's decision.

One of them accepted that the move was likely to upset some people, but really wasn't a "big deal", while another pointed out that Trump's actions often divided people, adding that "we got to just put on our seatbelts and (get) ready for the ride.”

And a third visitor pointed out there were other countries in the world who did the same, so it "would seem to fit that America steps out and takes a little bit more just like everybody else”.

Trump’s order only carries authority within the United States and Mexico, as well as other countries and international bodies, do not have to recognize the name change.
