where did this rhythm come from…and who owns it? 🤷‍♀️ trick question: nobody can own a rhythm. and yet something as simple as a two note pattern can evoke one - or many - distinctive potential sources, whose names imply a level of cultural ownership, even if no royalties are owed. in this case, the DUH-DUH DUH-DUH pattern, as heard in “7 Rings” as well as hundreds of modern pop and hip hop hits by Cardi B, Lizzo, Beyonce and many more, might have been inspired by traditional Scottish or 17th C English music…or they may have been by 2 Chainz’ distinctive use of it in the early 2010s. So how do we credit an artist like 2 Chainz for potentially introducing a non-protectable musical element (in this case a metrically accented 16th note followed by a dotted 8th note) into pop music, at which point it just becomes a new rhythmic choice? 🤷‍♀️ speaking of credit and origins: I learned about the term from Adam Neely @its_adamneely who in turn credits Nicholas and David Temperley among others in his well sourced and cited youtube video, which I highly recommend for a deeper dive into the DUH-DUH DUH-DUH thing 🔥 this clip is from the latest episode of the One Song podcast where we dig DEEP into the stems & stories behind Ariana Grande’s 2019 “7 Rings”✨listen to One Song pod / watch full vid on YouTube 🥰🥰🥰
