They have very complex instrumentation that ranges from dreamy landscapes to a heavy djent sound while the female vocalist Lynn Wu often gifts us with her ethereal voice often using long held out notes that add a unique atmosphere to the music. They specifically mentioned Devin Townsend, The Gathering and Radiohead as influences.
Zhang Jing on guitar, Chris Cui on bass and the American Anthony Vanacore on drums played together in the Beijing jazz scene and all contributed to a project called The Spice Cabinet.
Their first album, “One” was released on the major prog rock label, Inside Out Music on May 6th and released four music videos with tracks from the album. Those who heard the album were impressed, including Devin Townsend who would co-produce and make an appearance on their second album, “II: Frailty.” on April 26th, 2024. So far there are two music videos for tracks on that album and hopefully we hear a lot more new stuff from the band over the years.
There is no wrong place to start with this band, turn on their albums or a music video and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Thanks for watching and be sure to “Like,” Subscribe and check out my YouTube for other videos. Have a good listening session!
The video used in the background is the music video for, "Purge" Featuring Devin Townsend:
