This is a quick demo I did for the nice folks over at ToonTrack using their new Progressive EZX expansion for EZ Drummer 2. This song will be on my next solo EP, which should hopefully be out in December/January.
I use ToonTrack products ALL the time for my pre-production. I like writing out my drum parts using Superior or EZ Drummer before hand to give me a decent idea as to what I could potentially play on the kit. A lot of parts usually change in subtle ways from Superior/EZDrummer to the real kit, but it still serves as a good foundation and guide line. Regardless, Superior and EZ Drummer play a large role in my writing process. So I was really excited when ToonTrack contacted me about doing a demo using the new Progressive EZX expansion. The library was recorded by the amazing Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus, I Am Giant). I've always been a fan of Forrester's mixes, especially his drum sounds, and this expansion definitely reflects his style very well.
Again, this song will be part of my next solo EP, which will be out hopefully in December or January. I'll have more updates in the near future. This demo does have EZ Drummer 2 with the Progressive EZX expansion, but I will be using real drums for my EP. This is pre-production, and its a demo for ToonTrack.
The drums Im using in this mix are listed below.
-Snare: Mapex Black Panther and Ludwig Black Beauty mix
-Tom 1: 10" DW Collector's Maple
-Tom 2: 13" DW Collector's Maple
-Tom 3: 18" DW Collector's Maple
-Kick: 24" DW Collector's Maple
Below is a brief description of what Im doing for my drum mix.
Im doing some minimal EQ'ing on the toms, overheads, and kick. Im using some saturation on the Mapex Black Panther using the SPL Twin Tube Processor. Im also slightly compressing on both snares using the API 2500 compressor. The compression is more for tone as supposed to actual compression. The drums are already dynamically consistent because I've programmed all of the rim shots to be the same and all of the ghost notes to be the same. So the API 2500 is really there to add a bit of tonal characteristic to the snare. The only processing Im doing on the overheads is a high-pass at 186 Hz. Majority of the punch in my drum mix comes from my parallel compression bus. Im using the FET Compressor by Softube. My ratio is almost at 12:1, my attack is moderately fast, and my release is a bit faster than my attack. I've cranked the input so the drums are really getting squashed when they hit this bus.
Enjoy!
