George Washington University Assistant Professor Steven Hamilton says active decisions by the Albanese government have “worsened” the budget position by $21 billion.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has begun preparing for a May election following advice from Treasurer Jim Chalmers, who has pushed for a budget-focused campaign.

“If the government hadn’t taken those decisions or if the government had offset those decisions with savings or with new revenue, it would have been running almost a balanced budget,” Mr Hamilton said.

“I can’t look at that and say this is a government with good fiscal prudence.”
