
Four people, including three of a family, were electrocuted to death near Mirpur Commerce College in the capital Thursday night as a live electric wire tore and fell on a road submerged in water after heavy rain battered the city.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported 116 mm of rainfall in 24 hours until 6:00pm on Friday, which exposed the sorry state of city drainage, leaving people to suffer immensely.
Many areas went under water after heavy rain, with the Dhaka University area, Old Dhaka neighbourhoods, Nilkhet, Dhaka College, and Dhanmondi areas being the worst affected.
Shop owners in Dhaka New Market had to keep their businesses suspended on Friday after water entered the market following heavy rains inundating the ground floor.
Authorities used sucker machines to remove water from the market area on Friday evening, as the water showed no sign of receding from the market yard.
‘We went home after closing the shops around 11:00pm. I returned in the morning and found my two shops were under knee-high water,’ said Rubel Ahmed Khan, the owner of the two shops.
He said that they had to close their business operations on Friday, peak business time.
Mohammad Jasim, a trader on the footpath opposite Dhaka College, said water stagnation spoiled clothes worth Tk 15,000.
