Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that since the application system opened for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit earlier that day, approximately 240,000 people have applied successfully for the emergency benefit. He also said for those currently ineligible for the CERB, like students or people working 10 hours or less per week, help would be coming to help them as well.
Trudeau also addressed the recent tensions with the U.S. over medical equipment shipments, saying there have been "very productive" discussions with the U.S. He said they have seen "a number of situations" in which shipments from various countries have been delayed, and said it continues to be an ongoing problem. Trudeau was responding to a report that a shipment of three million masks were stopped at the U.S.-Canada border.
Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said on Monday that transmission has been happening more often than previously thought right before development of symptoms, as well as evidence of asymptomatic transmission. As a result, she said the special advisory committee for COVID-19 has determined wearing a non-medical mask can help people prevent transmission to others and protect others.
