K-pop has been increasing in popularity in the west for several years now, and it's quickly becoming hugely respected as a genre in its own right. But what's the genre's history, and how Korean does it actually have to be for it to be considered K-Pop?
K-pop's evolution from generation one artists like Seo Taiji & Boys and H.O.T., to the BLACKPINK's, B.T.S.'s and ITZY's of today, has been a massive part of the globalisation of the genre. But as K-Pop spreads the globe, can it remain limited to its South Korean structure, or will it inevitably have to become more flexible with its formula of trainees, debuts, idols, comebacks and South Korean artists?
Sub_Terrain digs deep into pockets of the underground music scene, unearthing the stories and timelines beneath the genres that shape contemporary culture. For Episode 6 of the series, we join music journalist and BIMM Institute Graduate Abi Scaife in her exploration into one of the fastest-growing music genres sweeping the world.
