Herr Mannelig in the Gothic language | The Skaldic Bard

Once again, here is the well-known Swedish folksong Herr Mannelig, this time in the Gothic language, translated and arranged by myself, and performed by my legendary wife (and me).

We're using a later, post-Wulfilian Gothic pronunciation this time, whereby the diphthongs ai /aɪ/ and au /aʊ̯/ had merged with /ɛ/ and /ɔ/ respectively.

Using comparitive linguistics, I reconstructed quite a few words in this Gothic translation (such as the words silk, manly, saddle, squeeze, island, wheel, among others). I had to be quite creative with some of the rewording, as I wanted to preserve the ABCB rhyming scheme without changing the meaning too much.

I use the term 'haljurunna' as a translation of the Swedish 'bergatrollet' in this version. As I've mentioned before in my previous covers, the word 'troll' originally refers to a wielder of magic instead of the Tolkien-esque monster that the word evokes today. Interestingly enough, the word 'haljurunna' (literally "one who traverses to Hel") is actually only known to us through the Latin word 'haliurunna'—clearly adopted from Gothic into Latin—used in Jordanes' History of the Goths to translate "magas mulieres" (literally "magic women", i.e. witches). I felt that I had to use this wonderful word as a localisation for a would-be Gothic audience!
