Fun with graphite sticks and pencils. It’s been a while since I’ve done something this soft with pencils. I started using a brush to do the background blends instead of my hands which is time saving and much cleaner. Then I used a kneaded eraser to put in the highlights and started with a 3B pencil. Eventually, I worked up to the 8B and 9B for the darkest sections. It is tricky since it’s a bit reflective and can be hard to see the details.
The imagery for this is packed full of stuff. I see the main cloaked figure standing on the tree like stump and at the bottom are two tiny figures sort of guarding the entrance so it can’t leave. There are some animal references, there’s a dolphin in the egg shape on the bottom left and a sheep’s head on the top right. There is a hand holding a cross on the right and on the bottom what I thought looked like a sand dollar but also reminds me of the host.
My favorite part is the bottom left below the egg shape or in the dark portion where there’s a cliff edge and the elements come together to look like a butterfly type creature centered around a cabochon. I was so distracted drawing this egg shape I didn’t notice it looked like negative space or actually the emptiness of space. Reid had to point it out to me. Now I see it both as negative and positive or in the foreground and background simultaneously.
Anyway, this one has some interesting organic elements.
The song is a compilation I made using GarageBand which is free to download from Soundcloud, edit and use with credit to Andyshouse or Andy Collins. The link is below:
