I stepped outside into the crisp night air, the quiet hum of the city fading as I walked down the empty street. The pavement beneath my feet felt solid—until it didn’t. Without warning, the ground gave way, and I plummeted into darkness.

I landed hard on what felt like packed dirt, coughing as dust swirled around me. A figure stood before me, silhouetted against the dim light filtering from somewhere deep in the cavern.

“Finally made it to the top,” he said, grinning.

“What the hell?” I gasped. “Why are you coming from the ground?”

“I was trying to find the mole people,” he said, dusting off his jacket. “And guess what? I found them.”

I looked around, eyes adjusting to the gloom. Caves and tunnels stretched in all directions, filled with vegetables and other stolen goods—fresh produce from aboveground gardens. It looked like a hidden civilization had been siphoning off supplies under the noses of the surface dwellers.

“Where did all this come from?” I asked, stepping carefully over a pile of carrots.

“Late-night raids,” he answered. “The gold, though? That’s just lying around. They don’t use it.”

“Who are they?”

A deep, rumbling sound echoed through the tunnel. The stranger’s face turned serious.

“The secret mole people,” he whispered. “They’re chill, but you gotta watch out.”

I took a step back. The ground beneath me shifted. Before I could react, it gave way again, and I was yanked down like a noose tightening around my neck. Dirt filled my mouth, my vision darkened, and the air grew thick with an earthy scent.

I hit the bottom with a muffled thud, barely catching my breath before a scurrying sound surrounded me. A shadowed creature crept closer, its glowing eyes narrowing.

“Yo, I’m sorry, my man,” it said, voice rough yet oddly casual. “I’m a mole guy, chillin’ in the ground.”

I blinked. “You… talk?”

“I thought your footsteps were those of the were-hound,” it continued, ignoring my shock. “We’re in danger. They capture our men, so we take matters into our own hands. Yeah.”

The ground trembled again. More glowing eyes appeared in the darkness.

“The secret mole people,” the creature repeated. “We’re chill, but you gotta watch out.”
