Richard Carpenter (born 1946) is a talented songwriter, arranger, pianist and keyboardist. His younger sister Karen Carpenter (1950-1983) originally started as a drummer. However, her captivating voice gradually became the focal point of the group, leading to a decline in her drumming. She often described herself as a "drummer who sings," but being positioned behind her drum kit made it hard for audiences to see her, which led to her being encouraged to step forward on stage.
Throughout her life, Karen struggled with depression and anorexia nervosa, issues that had a profound effect on her music career and personal life.
Tragically, she passed away unexpectedly in 1983 at the age of 32, which brought significant public attention to anorexia nervosa.
Karen married Tom Burris in 1980, but their marriage faced many challenges, and by the time of her death, she was in the process of getting divorced.
