Speed tape is a high-performance aluminum pressure-sensitive tape used in aviation for temporary, non-structural repairs on aircraft surfaces. Despite its nickname, it has nothing to do with speed measurement; rather, it’s designed to withstand extreme conditions such as high-speed airflow, temperature changes, and UV exposure during flight.

Maintenance crews use it to patch minor dents, scratches, or panel gaps, secure loose components, and prevent further wear until a permanent fix can be made. Its strong adhesive and heat-resistant metallic backing make it ideal for the aircraft environment, and while it resembles duct tape, it is far more advanced and expensive, often costing hundreds of dollars per roll. Though seeing it on planes can alarm passengers, its use is approved by aviation authorities like the FAA for temporary fixes in non-critical areas.
