Seventeen Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto are on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites: "Kyoto illustrates the development of Japanese wooden architecture, particularly religious architecture, and the art of Japanese gardens, which has influenced landscape gardening the world over."
