Darrell Glenn first recorded "Crying in the Chapel" in 1953 while still in high school, backed by his father’s band, the Rhythm Riders. The song became a local hit in Fort Worth, Texas, and quickly gained national attention. Multiple artists released versions that summer, including Rex Allen, the Orioles, and June Valli, with all reaching Billboard charts across genres. Glenn's version peaked at No.6 on the pop chart and No.4 on the country chart, and sold over a million copies by August 1953 and became a lasting classic.
Elvis Presley recorded his version in 1960, but it wasn’t released until 1965. It became his first million-seller in years, reaching No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Easy Listening chart for seven weeks. It also hit No.1 in the UK and was later included in his gospel album How Great Thou Art 1967. The song remains a beloved gospel standard.
