Helen Shapiro links Paul McCartney and his song She's Leaving Home, written about Melanie Coe.

The Beatles’ first UK tour, in spring 1963, was supporting headliner Helen Shapiro. Helen had already scored seven UK hits, the Beatles second hit, Please Please Me, had just entered the UK charts.

On 4 October 1963 the Beatles made their debut on UK TV music show Ready Steady Go!

Once again it was with Helen Shapiro as she sang her tenth UK hit, Look Who It Is, directly to John, George and Ringo. Paul missed the Helen Shapiro segment because he was presenting the prize to miming competition winner, Melanie Coe.

In 1967 Paul read a newspaper article about a 17-year-old girl who’d run away from home. This inspired him to write the song She’s Leaving Home. Paul later discovered that runaway girl was the same Ready Steady Go! winner, Melanie Coe.
