Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II continues with the fifth week of the largest invasion in history - Operation Barbarossa, as the battles at Smolensk, Uman and Yelnya. Previously we have covered the fourth week with the German forces slowed down and ambushed at Soltsy. (). In the fourth week of July 1941, the Eastern Front of World War II enters a brutal new phase. Operation Barbarossa continues to stretch German supply lines and command structures to the breaking point, while the Red Army, reeling from devastating losses, begins to show signs of adaptation and resilience. In this episode of our week-by-week Eastern Front series, we examine the critical battles, strategic reorganizations, and overlooked naval operations that shaped this pivotal stage of the war. We explore the role of the Baltic, Black Sea, and Arctic naval theaters, where control of vital ports and Arctic supply routes became essential for both sides. On land, Army Group North pauses to regroup near Leningrad, the Soviet Northern Front strengthens its defenses, and the Red Army undergoes a massive reorganization to counter German Panzer mobility. The focus then shifts to two major encirclements: the fierce fighting at Smolensk and the disastrous Soviet defeat at Uman, where hundreds of thousands of troops were lost. Despite staggering setbacks, the Soviet Union demonstrates remarkable endurance, raising fresh armies and preparing for a long war. Meanwhile, German forces begin to feel the strain of extended supply lines and mounting casualties.
