In loving memory of France Nooks (April 14 1992 - Feb 7 2018)
Today is Bob Marley’s birthday and marks a very great day in Jamaica’s music, history and culture. It is also a very sad day for friends, family and fans of the young Jamaican singer France Nooks, who passed away exactly a year ago today in tragic circumstances. On the afternoon of 6 Feb, 2018, France was in a taxi on his way to meet friends at the Marley birthday concert celebrations that happen every year at the Bob Marley Museum in Hope Road, Kingston. After pulling up near the concert location, the taxi driver tried to force France to pay double the normal taxi fee. Although it was only a dollar or two more, this can be the difference between eating or not for many young Jamaicans, and there was no reasonable reason why the taxi driver should be paid more on this day. France objected to this, an argument ensued, and within minutes the taxi driver had pulled out a knife and stabbed France in the heart. Three hours later France was dead. He was only 26.
What makes this story even more tragic is that France was able to escape the scene and get himself to a nearby hospital, as well as call some family members who met him there. He required emergency heart surgery, but there were delays as there was no heart surgeon immediately available. This is a real problem in Jamaica, which is a poor developing nation with hospitals often hopelessly understaffed. France waited more than three hours to receive treatment, but tragically passed away before a qualified surgeon could arrive to operate on him.
France was smart, kind, talented and generous, with his own unique vocal style influenced by both roots reggae and hip-hop. He was a caring and thoughtful young man with a positive outlook and a real career in music opening up for him.
It’s painful to write about this. France was my friend as well as an artist I was working and communicating with regularly. He recorded two songs for the ‘Havana Meets Kingston’ project - ‘Dubwise’ featuring Prince Alla, and ‘Heart Of A Lion’ featuring Lutan Fyah, I-Maali and Brenda Navarette. Before France passed away, he had begun working on a music video for ‘Dubwise’. Unfortunately this footage is not available, but his good friend Kevin Salmon aka ‘Nova’ has compiled this tribute music video from camera and phone footage taken at various weekly dances in Kingston - predominantly Nova’s own night Dub School, but also Gabri’s Dub Club, Vinyl Thursdays and Trenchtown (thankyou to all these dances).
It is an important song with exceptional lyrics, encouraging everyone who loves reggae and dub music to educate themselves about the genre’s deep history and purpose. We dedicate this video to the memory of France Nooks - Rest In Power - and hope it brings comfort and inspiration to his family, friends and fans.
