6 953 people were killed in South Africa in the three months between October and December last year. That's 757 fewer murders than the same period in 2023.

Releasing third-quarter crime statistics, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu singled out Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Western Cape as the biggest contributors to the murder rate.
